Elna's Motherhood

The Maternity Hospital, located in the Château d'en Bardou, played a great role of solidarity during World War II thanks to the efforts of the Swiss nurse Elisabeth Eidenbez and the collaboration of the Swiss Service Civil International.

Its primary mission was to house and care for pregnant Spanish, Jewish and Gypsy women, many of them with small children, who were interned in concentration camps in southeastern France. Founded in 1939, the maternity home was set up in a semi-abandoned mansion on the outskirts of Elne. The International Red Cross was its main supplier of food, medicines and feeding bottles. The maternity had about 50 beds and each room was identified with the name of a Spanish, French or Swiss town.

Elna's Maternity Hospital is a fascinating novel about the true story that took place in this facility. Since December 1939, when the first baby was born, there were an average of 20 births per month, attended by volunteer nurses sent by the Swiss nursing school. Of the total number of births, nearly 400 were to children whose mothers were women refugees from the Spanish Civil War who were interned in concentration camps in southeastern France. It also had 200 children born to Jewish women persecuted by the Nazis during World War II. It was closed by the Gestapo in 1944, after having helped 597 babies to be born.
